# Budgets and profitability

> Retainers, margins, and what hasn't been billed yet.

Budgets turn tracked time into commercial answers: is this project profitable,
and what haven't we invoiced?

## Setting a budget

On a project's settings, set hours or value. As time is logged against the
project, consumption tracks against it.

## Threshold alerts

Set thresholds (commonly 80% and 100%). When one is crossed, owners and admins
are notified, and it appears in their daily digest — so overrun surfaces while
there's still time to act.

## What it unlocks

| Report             | Answers                                        |
| ------------------ | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **Profitability**  | Cost against value, per project and per client |
| **Unbilled**       | Delivered work not yet invoiced                |
| **Client invoice** | Unbilled time for a client over a date range   |

  Profitability needs **cost and bill rates** set on your people
  (**Settings → Members**, admin only). Without rates, hours are counted but
  margin can't be.

## Marking work billed

Once time is on an invoice, mark it billed so it stops appearing as unbilled.
